Committee on Special Education: Parent Member Training

Sponsored by The Advocacy Center and the Regional Special Education- Technical Assistance and Support Center

Would you like to learn more about the role of the Parent Member on the Committee on Special Education? Are you already serving in that role and would like more strategies for effective participation? This training introduces the role of parent member and offers strategies and techniques that will make you an effective parent member. The three modules contained within this training are intended to provide CPSE and CSE Parent Members with a best practices approach to the CPSE/CSE process and their role as a Parent Member that is consistent with New York State law and regulation. The entire training takes about 4.5 hours.

Are you ready for your child's Annual Committee on Special Education Meeting?  An annual review is a Committee on Special Education (CSE) meeting to plan for the next school year.  This webinar will help parents prepare for annual reviews.  Topics to be covered include pre-meeting preparation, importance of understanding your child's IEP, and tips to help parents collaborate in designing an appropriate program for their child.

Advocacy is the act of problem solving with a purpose and a goal. Many parents whose children have special educational needs advocate on behalf of their children. If you feel overwhelmed by this prospect or you are not as effective as you could be, then take one step at a time. We will show you how.

  • ·         Learn the basic steps required for effective advocacy
  • ·         Practice the steps using hands-on activities
  • ·         Learn that advocacy does not need to be adversarial to be effective
