Committee on Special Education: Parent Member Training

Sponsored by The Advocacy Center and the Regional Special Education- Technical Assistance and Support Center

Would you like to learn more about the role of the Parent Member on the Committee on Special Education? Are you already serving in that role and would like more strategies for effective participation? This training introduces the role of parent member and offers strategies and techniques that will make you an effective parent member. The three modules contained within this training are intended to provide CPSE and CSE Parent Members with a best practices approach to the CPSE/CSE process and their role as a Parent Member that is consistent with New York State law and regulation. The entire training takes about 4.5 hours.

Advocacy is the act of problem solving with a purpose and a goal. Many parents whose children have special educational needs advocate on behalf of their children. If you feel overwhelmed by this prospect or you are not as effective as you could be, then take one step at a time. We will show you how.

  • ·         Learn that advocacy does not need to be adversarial to be effective
